New Nuclear Weapon Hopes



Russia hopes to deploy a new submarine-launched nuclear missile next year, underlining Moscow's determination to upgrade its nuclear strike forces, Deputy Defense Minister Vladimir Popovkin was quoted as saying Thursday.

Popovkin told Krasnaya Zvezda that he hoped that the armed forces would accept the Bulava, a submarine-launched, long-range nuclear missile, for service next year. (Reuters)




Georgian Village Set Ablaze



TBILISI -- A South Ossetian militia raided a village within the Russian-

controlled buffer zone around the breakaway region and set buildings on fire, a Georgian official said Thursday. No injuries have been reported.

Thursday's attack occurred in Kere, Georgian Interior Ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili said. The raid could not be independently confirmed, but an AP news crew saw ambulances and fire trucks heading toward the village. (AP)




EU Vows Action on Pirates



MOMBASA, Kenya -- The EU vowed quick military action against Somali pirates on Thursday, and Kenya arrested a maritime official for giving "alarming" information that one hijacked ship's military cargo was bound for Sudan.

Last week the pirates seized the Ukrainian vessel MV Faina off Somalia, with 33 T-72 tanks aboard, and are demanding $20 million for the ship.

Europe is speeding up a plan for at least nine countries to take part in a joint operation against the pirates. (Reuters)




Air Force's Mega-Maneuvers



The country will stage its largest Air Force exercises next week since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, while a naval convoy on its way to Venezuela prepares for a show of strength in the Mediterranean.

Aircraft including the supersonic Tu-160 nuclear bomber and the strategic bomber Tu-95 will take part in the Oct. 6-12 maneuvers in the Far East and in the central Volga region, the Defense Ministry said on its web site Thursday. (Bloomberg)




Orange Teamwork Talks



KIEV -- The Ukrainian parliament took a step Thursday toward restoring Ukraine's orange governing coalition by striking down several laws denounced by President Viktor Yushchenko.

Parliament speaker Arseniy Yatsenyuk immediately announced that talks would resume shortly on putting together the team linked to the 2004 Orange Revolution. (Reuters)
