Folk, Fire And Food To Feature At Festival

04 September 2008By Svetlana Osadchuk / Staff WriterThe annual open-air folk music festival Harvest will take place on Saturday for the fifth time as a part of Moscow's City Day celebrations.

A total of nine hours of live music is planned at Krepost Setun, situated on Vorobyovy Gory, featuring Russia's best folk artists as well as international guests. There will be Slavic, Irish and Scandinavian folk music, along with all kinds of world and medieval music and Scottish folk dancing.

"This year it will be not just a musical event. It will be a real festival with lots of traditional food and rare drinks, such as medovukha (mead). The fire program is also really impressive," said festival director Ivan Dontsov from the Veresk Cultural Foundation, one of the organizers of the event.

Among the best musical performers include Medvezhy Ugol, a band from Kazan that performs cheerful Slavic folk rock, Troll Gnet El, one of the current leaders in heavy Russian folk-rock, and the charismatic Foggy Dew from Rostov-on-Don, one of the best Irish folk performers in Russia. The legendary Russian folk-rock band Kalinov Most is also slated to participate.

Among the special guests is Scottish singer-songwriter Tommy Beavitt, who will perform in Russia for the first time.

Apart from the concerts on the main stage, musicians will be performing around the site. There will be master classes of folk dances, folk games and entertainment for children and hand-made souvenirs and traditional food and drinks will be on sale. Avis Dei, the most colorful medieval theatre in Moscow, will present costumed shows, followed by a fire performance.

The festival's after-party is scheduled for Sunday in the musical club "Mezzo Forte," featuring Oleg Boiko, Telenn Gwad (Moscow), Foggy Dew and Tommy Beavitt, along with videos of the best of the festival and special acoustic performances.

The folk music festival Harvest takes place Sat. from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Krepost Setun, located at 5B 2nd Setunsky Proyezd. From metro Kievskaya, take bus 71 or 791. Entrance is 500 rubles for adults, 400 rubles for holders of a Veresk club card and visitors in folk dress, and free for children under 12. The tickets will be sold at the festival entrance.

The after-party will take place at on Sun. at 7 p.m. at Mezzo Forte, located at 53 1st Ostankinskaya Ulitsa. Metro VDNKh. Tel. 602-2446. Entrance is 200 to 300 rubles.
