What to Do: Make It a Night at the Museum

14 May 2008By Lara McCoy Roslof / Special to The Moscow TimesSeveral Moscow museums and galleries will participate in the 11th annual Night of Museums on Saturday, May 17. The Night of Museums, also known as the Long Night of Museums, began in Berlin in 1997 as an attempt to bring more people into museums and art galleries, focusing on younger people who may not be regular museum-goers. More than 125 museums in 120 cities across Europe now participate, holding free late-night open houses on the same day.

Locally, the house-museum of sculptor Alexander Burganov will be open with a special program from 8 p.m. until 2 a.m. The evening will feature a series of ballet miniatures by dancers from the Moskovia Theater, as well as performances by Miki Nakagawa on the violin and Veronika Kozhukharova on the saxophone. Drawings by students from School 59 honoring Gogol's 199th birthday will also be on display.

A group of popular local galleries including Artplay and Winzavod will keep their doors open until 5 a.m. on that night as part of the Doutrart project. Fifty galleries, four disk jockeys and 72 artists will take part in nine performances, seven concerts and one master class, according to news releases.
