Treasure Hunt: Women's Day Presents

04 March 2008By James Marson / Special to The Moscow TimesInternational Women's Day is one of the most important national holidays in Russia. The day was first celebrated in Europe in 1911 as an event promoting women's rights, and when Russian women went on strike calling for "bread and peace" on International Women's Day in 1917, it proved to be the beginning of the Russian Revolution. Today the celebration has lost much of its political content and is marked by men giving presents to the women in their lives. The greatest question for men, of course, is: "What to buy?"

Flowers -- If you can't get out of the office to a kiosk, then there are several Internet delivery companies offering a range of flowers. Try floraexpress.ru or bestflora.ru for a variety of options.

Cosmetics and perfumes -- There are plenty of stores in Moscow that offer a range of products, and Arbat Prestizh (www.arp.ru) offers special gift boxes for some purchases.

Gift certificates -- Spa treatments make an excellent gift, and there are many options around Moscow. Akvamed (www.aqua-med.ru) offers certificates of 1,500, 3,000 or 5,000 rubles, which can be redeemed for any of their treatments. The Expat Salon (www.expatsalon.ru) also offers gift certificates that can be purchased in any amount or for a specific service if you'd rather keep the price of your gift a secret.

Make sure you don't forget to say 'S prazdnikom!' or 'Happy holiday!' to all your female acquaintances on the day itself. And if you need some help with compliments to pay those important women in your life, take a look at www.8-day.ru for a comprehensive list.
